The Problem
A local dust extraction specialist employed APDS Limited to reduce a prestigious yacht manufacturer’s energy consumption. The manufacturing plant uses 16 centralised vacuum cleaning units to provide the maximum extraction at the point of dust generation. Each of the systems has been designed for 36 operators to be connected to the systems at any one time. The extract is produced by a high pressure two stage fan set. As not all workstations were in use at any one time it was felt that the best form of control would be to use a pressure transducer in the extraction line and the fitting of a variable speed drive operating in PID control.
The Solution
As part of the energy survey APDS offered to prove the savings by installing an ABB inverter on the unit for a week. This demonstration proved APDS’s confidence in their calculated savings and gave the Financial Director clear proof of the energy saving possibilities. The extraction system was monitored for a week in normal operation and then for another week with an ABB inverter operating at a reduced speed. This test clearly demonstrated that the predicted savings were more than achievable.
