250kW Drive Back Online in Under 24 Hours for Plastics Manufacturer

Drive fault at plastics manufacturerWhen production stops, every minute counts. APDS were called out to a breakdown at a plastic manufacturing company in Wiltshire, where a short circuit fault on a 250kW mixer drive had brought operations to a halt.

The Callout

The call came in during the evening, and by the following morning, APDS engineer Chris Phillips was on site. Equipped with both the ACS580-01 expert-level spares case and a temporary replacement drive, Chris was able to give the customer clear options:

  • Attempt an on-site repair of the faulty drive.
  • Install a temporary replacement to get production moving immediately.

The Solution

On inspection, Chris confirmed an IGBT short circuit on the V phase. Due to the environment not being ideal for in-situ repair, the customer opted for the temporary drive installation. This meant their mixer could be brought back online quickly while APDS arranged to repair and fully test the original unit back at our workshop.

The Result

Within less than 24 hours of the original call, the plant was back up and running – minimising disruption and keeping production on track.

APDS will now carry out workshop repairs to the faulty drive before returning to site to swap the units back. In addition, we’ve provided recommendations for improving cabinet ventilation to reduce dust ingress, helping to further protect equipment and improve long-term reliability.

Customer Feedback ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
