Industry: Food & Bev
Application: Compressor
Site Challenge: PAR Foods offers the complete food export solution. They take care of everything from logistics to customs entries so their clients can focus on their own business. When dealing with shorter shelf lives, they know the importance of getting orders to site as quickly as possible. Shipping perishable food products is their specialty.
Par Foods were concerned that their 2 x 55kW chillers were costing a lot money and energy to run. With their fixed priced tariff due to change in Sept 2023 PAR Foods Managing Director Paul Riley, approached ABB and APDS for a solution to understand and help alleviate these issues.
A site energy audit was conducted by Rich Lane of APDS and Sheraz Chaudry, of ABB Motors. The Audit identified 2 end-of-life legacy motors Newman 55kW motors, pre-1988 combined with an obsolete fixed speed softstarter solution.
APDS Solution: APDS data logged chiller 2 for a week and quickly identified the energy saving potential of modernising this process.
- Thermal image from new ABB high efficient motor
- Thermal image from legacy motor
The compressor on the chiller needed to have an input rotation of at least 970rpm and max of 1000rpm. Post-install the compressor ran at the same speed. Improvements in efficiency is there are lower losses in the IE5 Motor. Post install we conducted another data logging session which has shown the process is now running at 979rpm at the compressor and achieving massive savings against the pre-install solution, more than 60% saving.
Benefits:
- 63% Energy saving even after doubling of Energy Supplier costs
- Significant drop in ambient noise
- Infinite process control
Outcome and Conclusion: PAR Foods have secured new electric tariffs but have managed to still realise a reduction in kWh on their monthly bill, so although the price has increased, the kWh has decreased. to save over 60%. Paul Riley has confirmed the increased costs have been negated by savings already coming through, so great result all around.
