When a plastic manufacturing company in Wiltshire suffered an unexpected breakdown late one evening, production was brought to a standstill. The cause was traced to a short circuit fault on a 250kW mixer drive – a critical piece of equipment needed to keep output moving.
Fast Response
The call came into APDS that evening, and by the following morning, engineer Chris Phillips was on site. Thanks to the work of the APDS service team, Chris arrived fully prepared with both the ACS580-01 expert-level spares case and a temporary replacement drive, ensuring that the customer would have more than one option to get back online quickly.
On investigation, Chris confirmed that the fault was due to an IGBT short circuit on the V Phase. With the operating environment making an on-site repair less than ideal, the decision was made to fit the replacement drive immediately. This meant production could be restored while APDS took the faulty unit back to our workshop for a full repair and test under controlled conditions.
Back Up and Running in Under 24 Hours
Thanks to the swift response and clear communication, the customer’s mixer was fully operational again within 24 hours of the original call. APDS will now complete the repair work at our workshop and return to site to swap the drives back once the faulty unit has been restored.
As part of our ongoing support, we have also recommended improvements to the cabinet ventilation, to reduce the amount of dust ingress and further strengthen the reliability of the system in the long term.
